Blood

Blood is a fluid that transports oxygen and nutrients to the cells and carries away carbon dioxide and other waste products. Erythrocytes are highly abundant circulating cells in the vertebrates. The major function associated with these cells is respiratory gas exchange however other functions including interaction with the immune system have been attributed to these cells.

Function of Erythrocytes

The principal function associated to the erythrocytes is oxygen and carbon dioxide transport. In addition to this gas exchange function, they also play a role in homeostasis protecting against oxidative damage and regulating blood flow distribution in muscles.

Erythrocytes and Immunity

Erythrocytes directly participate in the immune complex reaction and haemoglobin is an important source of bioactive peptides vital in the innate immune response. Erythrocytes are known to actively support macrophages in the immune response process. These functions elucidate the key role played by erythrocytes in the immune system of the bird.
